This depicts a dancer in the role of Sparticus from the ballet of the same name by Aram Khachaturian 1903-1978, which was first performed in Leningrad in 1956 and later premiering in London with the Bolshoi Ballet was in 1969.
The story of the Sparticus leading his rebel army of gladiators and slaves against the rule of empire in ancient Rome already been made famous by the 1951 book and later the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film starring Kirk Douglas in the title role.
