Bidding ended. Lot is unsold.
Starting with a block
of wood with offset pentagons drawn on each of the opposite faces, this organic
carving is as much a result of attempting to resolve the transition between the
two shapes as it is an exercise in symmetry. The tripod base was carved from a
separate piece and the two parts are separated by a pentagon of red jade – the
only clue left behind as to the base geometry behind the piece. Interestingly
(maybe only to me), it is one piece, made in two halves, resting on three feet,
with a five-sided section, eight abstracted leaf forms and thirteen projecting
sections in total. There’s Fibonacci everywhere, if one only cares to look.
