The fossil locality at Holzmaden in
Germany is celebrated for specimens that show beautiful preservation. The rocks
they come from are lower Jurassic in age (approximately 180 million years old).
Fossils of many kinds of creatures are found at Holzmaden but Crinoids (sea
lilies) and ichthyosaurs are among the most sought-after and are perhaps the
most desired by collectors.
