Lot 209
A pair of carved stone armorial griffins
ex London Wall
114cm high
These dragons were reputedly part of a collection of statuary sold to two grand houses, Haggerton and Wilton Hall, Northumberland in 1760 from the demolition of the medieval London gates. It is possible that the dragons may have come from Ludgate, rebuilt in 1586, demolished in 1760, where they would have sat in raised alcoves.
